Natural Disaster Specialized Dogs

Sofia Terife

Natural Disaster Dogs
The problem that I am discussing is the natural disasters destruction. This problem is caused by nature, but humans do help in making them more constant and stronger. A natural disaster happens because of a disruption of the environment. Human activity, takes part in the frequency and the intensity of each disaster. More people have been displaced by disasters than from war. The people who is at risk is everyone in the planet, because every continent and country can suffer a disaster in anytime, and everything in it might get destroyed. In this problem we could say that everything, even tiny things are at risk.
I chose this problem, because I think that there should be a way to help people who suffer natural disasters all year long. In the country we live in, we have few natural disasters; but, in countries such as Indonesia, people suffer a lot of disasters per year. The destruction provoked by a disaster is massive and many people become homeless after some disasters. There are houses, such as the ones in the US that are made out of wood, and they are not as strong as a house that is made out of brick. Making a house that is strong and can’t fall apart because of a natural disaster may be hard to build, because the proper materials are not cheap, and it takes a lot of time, and people can’t afford loosing time of their jobs, because they are rebuilding their houses.
The world wouldn’t look the same, because as the name of it tells us, it is a Natural Disaster, it happens by nature. We can help the people who have problems such as, problems with water and electricity after a shock and also people’s home after a natural disaster. It is possible that people have problems after a disaster, because of its shock. Or also they might be left homeless, and while they are constructing their house they can be helped.
My invention is a giant dog; the breed may vary depending on the kind of problem a certain family needs help with. These dogs are capable of lifting buildings and houses. They are able to track people under rocks from long distances away. This ability comes from their accurate hearing and sense of smell. These dogs are trained to be careful and to treat people respectfully. In addition, they don’t bite or bark if it is not necessary.
These dogs are bred by a scientist. They are kept in big dog academies, where they are trained to track, search, and lift things without worsening the situation. Each dog has its own spot where it sleeps and eats. The persons who call to report the emergency must give details about the specific problems. Then the person in charge of the kennels presses a button and the dog will immediately know where it has to go, and what its task is. This service is completely free, you don’t need to pay, and we actually have an annual fund raiser outside town, where the dogs model for the people to see them.
The dogs operate with on a combination of instinctual and taught commands. The dogs, as said before, are trained in special dog academies, and know how to do certain things. When the dog is released it already knows where to go, because there is a connection between the phone line and the dogs’ kennels. The good thing is that they know what to do, and they don’t need people there telling them to search.
These dogs will help with the problem of natural disasters, because they help people get out of where they are trapped, and can help them pick up the fallen rocks of their houses. These dogs work together, always, because if a certain person asks for help and their need is multiple, a dog alone can’t do it, so we send another one. These dogs help with the water and electricity collapse after the shocks, they use water energy, they get water from a nearby river, and use a special machine provided by the company.

Natural Disasters Destruction

  1. A really big vacuum that sucks the natural disaster in.
  2. A giant bubble that protects the city or country that is going to be affected by this disaster.
  3. something that helps get water and electricity back
  4. A machine that helps re-build buildings, and houses.
  5. giant dogs that help people get out if they are under a house.

Five Global Problems

  1. Child Soldiers: this problem is man made. This problem is affecting mainly the countries population, but also affects everyone in the world... because it might change the way of thinking of people around the world.
  2. The Criticism of religions: This is man made also. Everyone in the world is affected because of this problems... because people should not criticize other people's religion... because we need to have diversity, and we need to be OK with each others way of thinking... we might not like it, but we should not criticize it.
  3. Global Warming: this problem is man made. This problem affects the whole world, because we are burning up fossil fuel, and that is preventing that the sunlight outside the atmosphere get out, and that heats up the world... that is why we are having such hot days, and it has changed the climate of each country.
  4. Global hunger: this problem has a combination of both... man made, and naturally, this is because of the location of each country. This problem affects everyone in the world, because there are countries, for example Zimbabwe that has a government that doesn't care too much about the people in the country... just some months ago there was a cholera problem because of the water being polluted, and the government didn't care, people died, because they didn't give them enough medical support or anything. But at the same time is is a problem of location, because that country is in Africa, and the weather there is really hot, so there has to be problems for growing crops, and food. The people who is afected is the poeple who lives in such countries that have a government that doesnt mind that there are deasises.
  5. Natural disasters destruction: natural. This is a problem that we cannot control of happening, because they happen naturally, and they cannot be controled. They might become intenser or less intense that what they were at first. This affects everyone, because the people who live in such countries that get affected about every month or so. But it also affects the people who lives around the country, or on the other side of the world it concerns them.

The best Part Of Me

  1. Were you able to successfully complete your original design? Why or why not? I was able to complete the project with the original design, but with some variations. This variations happened, because I was not able to get the pictures with direct sunlight. This happened because my camera broke, and I had to take the pictures with my grandma's camera, and when I took he pictures it was already getting dark, so I had to use the flash.
  2. How did you manage your resources to complete your project on time? I managed to do this project by using, a camera, my garden, and time. Well, when I was going to take the pictures of the project, my camera was broken, so I had to use another camera, this is how I managed to take the pictures. My, garden, well it is always there, but I kind of had to arrange some of the plants before taking the pictures, because my dog, messes them up, so I had to fix them a little bit. And finally, my time, the day I had to take the pictures, where some days that I had a lot of homework, and was the day before I left for VANAS, so I had to do my bags. Then when I came back from VANAS my camera was broken, so I couldnt take the pictures some days later when I found another camera.
  3. Describe how you achieved proper subject, lighting, and composition.Well I actually wanted to do this project with direct sunlight, but when I took the pictures I had to use the flash, because i was late and there wasnt too much light. The subject of my picture, is my favorite tree of the garden, because it has beutiful flowers the whole year. The subject of the picture is a banch of the tree that has many flowers, and it is the main object, there isnt anything else in that picture, apart from a little background. Tho composition of this picture is simple, but is pretty. It is simple because there isnt too many things in the picture, it is one subject and nothing else.
  4. Describe one thing you did successfully in your project. I think that something I did, that was the best thing in my project, was the picture, I liked this picture a lot, because is one of those pictures where you feel really proud of yourself. I think that it is one of the best pictures Ive ever taken, I take pictures oftenly, but this one is the kind of picture I dont take, so, I felt really good, when i saw the result of it.
  5. If you could change one thing about your project, what would you change? I think that I would change the story of the picture, because I really didn't like it, I think that it could have been better, because I didn't know what to write, so I wrote it like in five minutes, and I really think that I could have improved it, and that I could have made a better story for it.

violent video gams and toys

Violent Video Games and Toys

I think that violent video games and toys are teaching kids that violence is just a game. I kind of agree and disagree that banning the video games and toys is right, but at the same time is not. I think that it is right, because when little kids see their older brothers playing those kinds of video games, they think it is right to do those things. On the other hand banning these toys can be bad, because modern day kids –especially boys- like to play games such as paintball, I personally don’t find this game so bad, because you are just shooting paint at each other, and it looks fun. But at the same time it is actually kind of violent, and it is telling kids that even throwing paint at each other it is right. Kids since they are born are taught to respect and to treat each other as they would want to be treated, and by playing this kind of games their parents are just telling them the contrary and that is just wrong.

There is a lot of violence going on in the world, and when little kids are playing games such as the ones that you need hit someone so you can take their car, they are going to learn that violence is correct and that there is nothing wrong with hitting people.

There is just one problem, people actually think and expect that if they have a daughter the girl needs to be all girly and the boy needs to be really boyish, this is a problem, because when the toys companies design toys they design toys such as Barbies and Pollies for girls and little soldiers and cars for boys. And I think t that it is right to have different types of toys for boys and girls. But parents cannot expect kids to be nonviolent when they only like to play violent games, and they give them the game as Christmas presents.

I think that parents who block the violent TV channels to their kids are dumb, because kids need to know what is right and what is wrong. For example, when I was little my mom didn’t let me see the movie Troy, and other really violent movies, but as time passed, she started letting me see more, and more movies, because I grew older, but I when I see those violent movies, I don’t start saying “cool” or things like that when people die. But kids who were introduced to violent games since they were really little and play violent games daily always say “cool” when someone dies.

In conclusion I think that banning them would be wrong because boys would not have fun playing with girl toys, but I can say that the toy companies could produce less violent games, so parents don’t complain.

5 Qualities

The qualities that I would like to show are...
The first one is, that I am a gymnastics lover.
The second one, is that I am a very ecological person, I like to keep the environment clean.
Thirdly is that I am a very studious person.
The fourth is that I am very brave.
Last but not least is that I am a fan of medicine.

I could show the first qualities, by taking a picture of all the gymnastics medals I have won in past years competing with other schools. This picture would be taken in my room, because all of the medals are putted in a cork in my room's wall, there is a window next to it, so if I take the picture, and it is day time, it will have a natural light.
I could show the second quality, by taking a picture, of my garden, because my garden has all sorts of trees, flowers, and animals. This picture would be taken, by me lying on my garden's floor, and taking the picture kind of upwards, the light will obviously be natural, and there will be a lot of birds and little animals on the trees.
The third quality can be showed by taking a picture of my school bag, because it is always full of books. I think that this picture could be taken by opening my school bag, and organizing the books inside so they are neat, and maybe this picture could be taken at night with flash, so it shows that like I am very studious I stay late at night studying.
The fourth quality can be showed by taking a picture of my scars, because I became very brave after getting crashing that class door. This picture can be taken by me, zooming in my camera, so the details of my scars are shown, the light can be natural or artificial.
The last quality can be described in a photo taking a picture of my shirt that says: "Trust me I am going to be a doctor". I would like to take this picture against a white wall, with natural light, because this shirt has a really bright color, so it will look nice with a white wall behind.

Personal Story

A really important event in my life, is when I was going to third grade, and I went through a glass door. When this happened to me, I was with my best friend, and my best friend’s parents, without my mom. The first thing that her parents told us, was to not run outside, because there were lot of glass doors. We where at their apartment at the beach, my friend Claudia and I were in the pool, her mom Hamdy called us from inside the apartment to tell us that the food was ready. As I said before, her mom told us not to run, but I was so hungry I completely forgot, and I ran to the house. It was about seven pm, when there is a weir light, and you cant see the glass. Like we where in the pool my feet were wet, and the floor was slipery. When I finally realized that the glass door was there, I tried to stop, but like my feet were wet, I couldn’t stop, so I slided and crashed the door. Instead of going through it, I kind of bounced, and all of the glass fell on me. Claudia, was behind me, and she catched me, before I hitted the ground that had all of the glass. But like we had bathing siuts, there was nothing to protect my body from the glass, and I got horrible cuts in my knee and in my arm. When Claudia’s dad, Miguel, relized what happened, he carried me to the car, and took me to the hospital.

In the hospital they didn’t know that I was alergic to a type of anestesia, and it made me have a wrong reaction. Claudia’s parents wanted to take me to a hospital here in Caracas, in an ambulance, but all of the ambulances were in La Guaira, and we were in Higuerote, so her dad, finally decided that they were going to take me in his car, with a nurse. While all of this happened I was unconsious, in the middle of the ride back to Caracas, I woke up, and asked for someone, and I saw a weird person holding me, and then I fell uncomcious again. What I remember after the ride home, was that all my family was there in the emergency room, and I told my mom, that what were they doing in Higuerote. Another thing that I remember, is when they took me to the E.R, that I saw a whole bunch of doctors around me, and a told them to please not cut my new bathing suit (obviouly they didn’t listen, and they cutted it).

The day after I arrived, was when Claudia, and her parents, came to visit me to the hospital, they brought me a big plush toy, that I called Sombra, because it was a Cheetah. I still keep this plush toy, like one of my favorites, because it is really pretty, and I have it since that horrible accident. I think that this is the most important thing that has happened to me in my whole life, because I had the support of my whole family, and friends, and also the support of my best friend that I know since I was in pre-school.

But that was the worst moment to have an accident, because I was changing from a school to another one, and I couldn't do anything, because I had a full leg cast, and my arm was immobilized, so at first it was really hard to meet new people, because of my condition at that moment. I was really lucky that Claudia, and Lucia that were my best friends at my other school, were changing to the same school.

Partner Portrait- Evaluation

· How can photography be used to show something unique about an individual?

Photography, if used correctly can show unique things about people. If you use it correctly, you might be able to express things that other people don't have.

· What was one difficulty about capturing a unique qualities partner's portrait?

A difficulty about capturing something unique about a person is that people just do it spontaneously, when you are trying to show something that the person does spontaneously, it is hard, because trying to get the exact “feeling” of that unique quality is hard.

· In what way were you successful in capturing your partner's portrait?

I think that I was successful with the picture of my partner, because I followed my plan, of all the pictures we took, that was the one that we liked the most, because it was the one that showed one of her real qualities, because she is sweet, and in the picture she is hugging a Teddy Bear, and that is sweet.

· Describe the subject of your portrait. What is he or she doing? Include information about the setting.

The subject of my portrait is my friend Camila, and she is hugging a teddy bear, trying to show how sweet she is. The setting of the picture was at school, in the green area of the canteen. On the background there are some trees, and there is a building that is the computer lab.

· Describe the lighting of your portrait. Is the lighting natural or artificial? From what direction is the light coming?

The lighting of my portrait is natural daylight, it is noticeable, because we were out in a yard, and we weren’t inside a building. The light of the picture, is giving light to the right side of her face, so that means that the direction that the light is coming, is the East.

· Describe the composition of your portrait. Did you use the rule of thirds? Explain how your composition helps make your portrait more interesting.

When I took the picture, I was not using the rule of thirds, I thought that this picture was going to be nice if it didn’t have the rule of thirds in it, because I liked the few trees in the background, and that there is also little background because when I took the picture I zoomed in, so the picture only took a little bit of background, and a lot of her face.

· What would you do differently if you could do this project again?

I think that what I would do differently, would be to take the pictures in the morning, because there is not so much sun light, so the picture would not have so many shadows in her face. I also would like to change the quality I was describing, because she wanted to have a picture that described her as a girly girl, we had taken that picture, but as i didn't have on my sketches we couldn't do it. Other things I would like to change, is the background, because if it was a background that had more things, that just trees, it would look better.

Describe A Portrait

The portrait I chose is portrait number 13, that is about a girl. The light in this picture, is a natural daylight, and has a natural background. The position of the light with the girl is really nice because it makes a beautiful effect of showing only one side of her face lit, and the other side of her face half lightened. The subject, in this case, the girl, is completely centered, but it is nice, because there is not much background left, because the photo was taken in a vertically. What I liked about the picture was that the colors are really combined, because there are all sorts of tones of dark colors, and there aren’t any bright colors in any part of the picture. Another thing that I liked about the picture, was that her eyes, even though they are not the main subject of the picture, are really nice. Yet another thing that I really liked where those white lines she had on her forehead, it was a nice way to call the attention a little bit to her face but not too much. The last thing I liked about the picture, is that the girl was so expontanuos about having her picture taken. If I was the photographer, I don’t think I would have changed anything about the picture, because everything had its place in the picture, nothing was wrong about the picture.

Internet History Paragraphs

In 2004 a student at Harvard University opened Facebook. Facebook is a webpage, where people can chat with each other, put pictures, or anything they want to share about their life. This is an innovation for the world, because if you have friends that are on the other side of the world, you can leave them messages as notifications, and they can answer you back even though you are not online. This may sound a lot like MSN or AOL, but it is different, because many people don’t check their mail so often, but they check their Facebook every day. People in the range of 12 to 30 years prefer using Facebook rather than a common mail, because everybody is online most of their day if they are not at school or at work, so it is easier to contact a person if you really need them.

In 1995 Amazon.com opens up. Amazon.com, is a web page, that is online shopping, this is a great web page, because if you really need something that is from another country, you can order it by Amazon. People like Amazon, because they can find everything much cheaper than for what they can find them in their own country if it is not USA. Even USA citizens like to use Amazon, because it delivers straight home or to their work, and they don’t need to go out to buy it, and it is easier to do it that way, so they don’t need to do a one our line so they can buy something that they can but in just 10 minutes at Amazon.com.

In 2008 Apple released the iPhone, giving the opportunity to the people around the world to have something small with a wireless. This is an important step in technology, because we are able to have wireless in iPods or our own phones. The iPhone has competition now, because the release of the Blackberry. The Blackberry doesn’t need to be around a wireless so it can connect to the internet, on the other hand iPhones, need to have a wireless around so they can connect to the internet. Obviously people that work prefer having a BB than an iPhone, because if they need to work they can work on their BBs. iPhones are really great, because of they have a big screen, and they are touch, and they are at the same time iPods, so you don’t need to have a phone separately from your IPod.

Portraits

1. Are they all portraits? Why or why not?
I think that they are all portraits, because their subject, are people, or a single person.

2. Choose one portrait. What do you like about it?
The portrait that I liked the most, is the one of your wife, because she is like the subject, but there are also some other things going on around her, so it makes it an interesting picture, because it is not confusing.

3. What don't you like about it?
I really don't have a dislike about the picture, because it has a nice contrast and you can see the main subject without having to look too much to find it, because the picture is not "overcharged", this means that it doesnt have so many thing on it, that make it confussing. But maybe one of the things I dont like about the picture, is that it is in black and white, but it is a really nice picture, so there is nothing that I could dislike.

4. Explain why the photo you chose is a portrait.
I think that the photo I chose is a portrait, because it has people, in this case only one person, so it makes it a portrait, and it is the main subject, and the only living creature of the picture, and that makes it be- I think- a portrait.

MYP Design Cycle, Investigate

In the Design Cycle, Investigate is the first part. When you investigate, you need to research about the problem and start thinking for solutions to it. Also you need to identify the problem, and think of a design that can solve the problem. In this step you need to research because you learn about whatever you are dealing with, and can give specifications to the following design.
Normally when we investigate, we are searching for things that we don't know, and then we can gather all the ideas for our project.
